Tree # 20

The first census of Ireland in 1659 did not show any records with relevant surnames in Kilkenny. The same applies to the Hearth Money Records of the late 1600s.

The records of early wills showed that a Michael Heade from Irishtown died in 1739 and left his estate to Mary Heade, a widow (presumably his wife).

The name Kilkenny is an anglicisation of a Gaelic name that translates as the Church of St Canice. It was the site of Catholic worship established by St Canice in the sixth century.  It is in the northern part of Kilkenny city known as Irishtown as can be seen from the 18th century map of Kilkenny City below.

Irishtown was quite separate from the rest of Kilkenny in the 16th century.  It had its own walls, its own Corporation and its own laws.  It was the oldest part of the city and it is the area to the north of the river running through the centre of the city.  Irishtown was in St Canice parish and to the south was St Mary’s and to the east was St John’s parish as can be seen from the parish map below.

St Canice (inc Irishtown)

The Catholic parish records for St Canice started in 1768.  I have searched these and have found the records of a James and Mary Whelan in the 1850s that also featured in the Griffiths survey of 1849 (as Hade). They were living at Butts Cross, an old part of the parish where traces of other ancestors living in Butts went back to 1816.  Descendants from this family, using the Heade variant, emigrated to America in 1870. I have lost track of them after 1920 and have not found a living descendant.

A Michael Hayden was in the 1827 Tithe records for Butts Cross.  The parish records show various Head, Hayd and other variants in Butts Cross in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

James married Mary Whelan in 1840 and they had the following children:

  • Kath Hayde b 1841, Granges Road
  • Mary Heade b 1843, Butts
  • William Head b 1845, Dorans Lane
  • Judith Head b 1847, Granges Road
  • Ellen Heade b 1852, Granges Road
  • James Hade b 1855, Granges Road. Mar Kate Cooney 1885 NY

Butts Cross, Walkin Street, Maudlin Street, Granges Road and Guard Lane are shown on the map below. As can be seen they are all close together which indicates that they must all be related.

James died circa 1869 and Mary took the two surviving children, Ellen Heade (b 1852) and James Hade (b 1855) to America.  They arrived on the Manhattan (as Heade) on 18 Oct 1870.

In 1880 they were in Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ. Mary was shown as the mother in law to head of the house, Barney Freeman. He married Catherine, an elder daughter.

In 1880 Julia Haide was also in Woodbridge. She was b 1855 and arrived in 1871 on the Wyoming. She is probably also another daughter.

Mary died 1886 (b 1808).

James (b 1855) was a fireman. He married Kate Cooney and they had:

  • James Jnr Heade b 1890, a plumber
  • Walter Sidney Heade b 1896, a polisher

In 1900, they were in Manhattan. They have adopted the Heade name and in 1920 were at 204 W 67th St, NY.

James Jnr and Walter Sidney were recorded in the WW1 Draft registration cards.

A map of Kilkenny City showing the relevant parishes is:

St Mary’s

The parish records for St Mary’s started in 1754 and I have found two families in these records in the late 1700s.  These were:

1) Henry Hayde, his wife Mary Mauris and children with births recorded as Hayde. One of the children, Richard, joined the army in 1790 and later fought at Waterloo.

2) Patrick Heade who married Catherine Carroll in 1777.  However I have found no trace of children.

Patt and Robert Heade, both flour manufacturers from Kilkenny City, signed the Oaths of Allegience to the King in 1779.

St John’s

St John’s records started in 1809 and these showed a number of Hayde/Haid/Haide births and marriages in the mid 1800s.  I have traced descendants to 1911 Kilkenny City census records where they were using Haide and Hade surnames. The family can be summarised as:

James and Margaret Dowling and then Margaret Knaresboro from 1847:

  • Patrick – see below
  • Michael – see below
  • Johanna Hoyd b 1842, Whitehouse Road
  • James Hoyd b 1848, Whitehouse Road.
  • Joanna Hoyd b 1849, Whitehouse Road

Patrick (as per James’s marriage records)

  • James Hayde b circa 1865. A stone polisher. Mar Johanna Kavanagh in 1885
    • John Hayde b 1888, Walkin St. D 1888
    • James Haide b 1890
    • Joseph Haide b 1893
    • Thomas Haide b 1893. Joined Irish army 1922
    • John Haide b 1895. D 1896
    • Johanna Haide b 1901
    • James Haide b 1905. Joined Irish army 1922

Descendants are in Clogheen and have adopted Haide.

Michael (as per Thomas’s marriage record):

  • Thomas Haide b 1861. Mar Ellen Johnson (d 1896) in circa 1880 then Jane Buckley in 1901.
    • Mary Jane Hayde b 1881, Walkin St
    • Johanna Hayde b 1882, Mandlin St
    • Elizabeth Hayde b 1884, Mandlin St
    • Catherine Hayde b 1887, Mandlin St
    • Ellen Hayde b 1888, Mandlin St
    • Hannah Hayde b 1890, Mandlin St.
    • John Haide b 1904
    • Anne Haide b 1907
    • James Haide b 1909
    • Teresa Haide b 1912
    • Anastasia Haide b 1914
    • Mary Haide b 1920
    • Joseph Haide b 1923

Descendants are in Kilkenny. They adopted Haide.

Thomas was a drummer in the Kilkenny Militia in the 1880s. Thomas joined the Militia again for 4 years at Wexford in 1900 aged 39 years 7 months.  He was then living at St Mary’s, New Ross, Wexford.  He was a musician and was a widower with 2 girls.  He had previously served 12 years with the Royal Irish and had been discharged in 1897. He was 5ft 4 ½ inches tall, fresh complexion, grey eyes and dark hair. He was discharged in 1908 and his character was noted as being very good.

In the valuation records they were in Walkin St Upper, Guard Lane and Mandlin St, the same places as Thomas and Ellen and James and Johanna.

I believe these families originated in Butts Cross in the St Canice parish and are related.

In the Ancestry Tree # 20 below, I have attempted to join this family together starting with Robert b circa 1730 and his sons Henry, James, Richard and Patrick born in the 1750s and 1760s:

Tree # 22

Dunnamaggan is in the middle of Co Kilkenny about halfway between Callan and Knocktopher. There was no sign of a Hayde or anything similar in this area in the 1659 census or the Hearth Money Records.

There only reason to devote time to researching this area is that a Hayde family was present in this area in the 1827 Tithe records.

The history of the area is well described in an article in the Old Kilkenny Review published by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society.  The Rev James Brennan, in a 1992 article, outlined the history from 1650 to 1800 in pages 958 to 967. This publication is in the library at Kilkenny.

It describes the Gaelic history of the name as originally being Dun-im-e-gain.  Which meant the Dun (or Fort) of Imgan. Imgan being a person of some importance at the time.

The article referred to the area as being fertile with fine parks and woodlands. The article however does not provide any clues as to why a Hayde family suddenly appeared in the early 1800s.

James and John Hayde b circa 1800

John and James Hayde were farming 17 acres at Moanmore in 1827.

Moanmore is at the foot of a mountain that stretches into Tipperary. They probably came from a Tipperary family and moved around the mountain.

The location can be seen below:

John and James were probably brothers. They both had children in the 1820s and 1830s and James was still in the area when he died in 1872.  There are no births in this area after the 1840s and after James died in 1872 there is no trace of any other family members in the parish, civil or census records.

Some researchers have assumed John and James were children of James and Catherine Dinsdale who had a family in Urlingford in the early 1800s.  This is unproven.  I suspect however that the link is more to Fethard or Clonmel/Cloneen however the records do not exist in order to prove this.

The families of John and James were:

John and Mary Cahill. They were at Moanmore in 1827 with James and #6 Moanmore in 1850. In 1850, John was farming 10 acres owned by William Morris-Reade Esq, a descendant of a Cromwellian settler. He owned all of Moanmore. The Dunamaggan parish records (which started in 1826) contain the baptisms of:

  • David Hade b 1826
  • Michael Heade b 1829, Lemonstown
  • John Heade b 1832, Rogerstown
  • William Hayde b 1835, Monassa

There was no sign of this family in the valuation records or elsewhere after 1850. Michael and John emigrated to America in the 1850s and I have found them in the 1860 census for St Louis. This is discussed in more detail below.

James and Margaret Morapy. They were at Moanmore in 1827 with John and #1a Loughberg in 1850. In 1850 they were in a house on land owned by Margaret Hayden, who owned most of Loughberg. The Hayden name was in the area at the time of the Hearth Money records. The Dunamaggaan parish records contain the baptisms of:

  • Richard Head b 1827
  • Margaret Head b 1827 (twin). Mar John Walsh 1850
  • Thomas Head b 1830, Monassa
  • John Headd b 1834, Monassa
  • William Haid b 1836, Baurscoob
  • Ellen Head b 1838, Baurscoob. Mar Patrick Hearn 1864

James was in the Petty Session records between 1855 and 1870 for various offenses regarding animals. He died Bourscoob in 1872. Margaret was in the valuation records until 1880.

His sons Thomas and John were also in the Petty Sessions records in the 1850s and 1860s for various offenses. Margaret featured in these records in the 1870s, again for offenses regarding animals.

I have found Richard, Thomas and John in the St Louis 1860 census.  As mentioned, this is discussed more below.

The Griffiths map of 1850 is:

James and Margaret Morapy farmed 1a at Loughbeg in 1850.

John and Mary Cahill farmed 10 acres at Moanmore in 1850.  John was probably the oldest and therefore ended up with the larger farm in Moanmore while John had to move his family to a smaller plot in Loughbeg.

Church, civil and census records at Dunnamaggan, Kilkenny are detailed at Dunnamaggan Families

Saint Louis, Missouri

St. Louis, Missouri

The population of St. Louis increased 228 percent between 1810 and 1820. It doubled between 1835 and 1840, and again by 1845; in ten years St. Louis went from half to twice the size of Pittsburgh. Earliest arrivals were from further east or England, followed by Irish and, soon after, Germans.

The Irish were attracted to St Louis as much as they were to Chicago, Boston and New York.  With St Louis being settled by the French the Irish Catholics saw an opportunity to emigrate to where they could practice their religion among the Catholic French.

By 1850, 43 percent of all St. Louisans were born in either Ireland or Germany. Irish immigrants often brought limited skill levels, putting them into direct competition with free blacks in cities for lower level jobs.

Irish immigrants in St. Louis congregated in two areas. Some lived in the “Kerry Patch” area on the near north side – a violent, dangerous, and impoverished neighborhood. Others lived around Cheltenham, centered around the intersection of present-day Hampton and Manchester. After rail connections to St. Louis opened in 1852, the clay and fire brick industry grew quickly. Irish immigrants worked in local clay mines. The first priests at St. James the Greater Parish, in today’s Dogtown neighborhood, were Irish when it was founded in 1861.

In 1860, there were several Head/Hade/Haide families in St Louis who were born in Ireland. These were:

The families were:

In Ward 3:

  • Patrick Heade/Hade b 1833 and Catherine O’Brien b 1834 with 3 children born from 1854 onwards
  • Michael Head b 1833 and Margaret b 1837 with one child born in Iowa in 1858 and one in St Louis in 1860

In Ward 4:

  • James Hade b 1836 and Winifred O’Keefe b 1838 and one new born child in St Louis
  • John Heade b 1835 and Ellen O’Connor b1836
  • John Hade b 1832 and Bridget Brennan b 1834
  • Catherine Hade b 1844

In Ward 8:

  • Patrick Head b 1820 and Rosanna b 1818 with a son born Louisiana 1846. Patrick, Rosanna and their son were in St Louis by the time of the 1850 census.  They were the only part of the family to have arrived by 1850 which leads me to think that he was an older relative who did the trailblazing for the rest of the family
  • John Heide b 1835 and Bridget b 1835 with a son born in Canada in 1859

Also known to have been in St Louis at the time, but not found in the 1860 census, were:

  • John Hade b 1835 and Mary Anne with a daughter b 1855 in Missouri

These Wards are all close together as can be seem from the map below:

The Wards numbered from left to right.  Number 1 was the large area to the left with Wards 2-8 being the slim areas with Ward 9 being the large area to the right.

By 1870, the following had also arrived in St Louis:

In Ward 5 (which borders Wards 3 and 4):

  • Richard Heade b 1828 and Bridget Walsh b 1830 with children born from 1863
  • Thomas Hade b 1840 and Hanora Cahill b 1845 with children born from 1867

Thomas and Hanora and James and Winifred, lived next door to each other in this census.

I believe these families came from Kilkenny as explained below. Their origins are outlined above.

Interestingly the traditional way to get to St Louis in the time period was to sail across the Atlantic to New Orleans and then get a ferry up the Mississippi to St Louis.  However I cannot find the relevant arrivals in the New Orleans records and with some children being born in Canada and Iowa leads me to believe that they firstly arrived in Chicago (or perhaps New York) and headed to St Louis overland.  The train network was still being developed at this time so this would have been a more arduous trip but may have been more affordable.

These families are shown in the ancestry tree at Kilkenny and St Louis Tree # 22.

An overview is as below:

Children of John b abt 1800 and Mary Cahill

David Hade b 1826

There was no sign of David after his baptism in Dunnamaggan parish.

Michael Heade b 1829 and Margaret Healy b 1836

Michael and Margaret married in Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa in 1856. Margaret was from Mount Pleasant. The marriage record does not show the names of parents.  I have made an assumption that this is the correct family linkage.  I have based this on the fact that Michael and Margaret were living in St Louis close by others from the same Irish parish. The use of the name Martin is also telling as it was only used by the Heade/Hayde families in this Irish parish.

  • Martin b 1858 Iowa d 1929. A blacksmith. Mar Mary O’Connor
    • Michael b 1885 d 1932
    • Margaret b 1888
    • Martin J b 1891 d 1953
  • Mary 1861 d1942. Mar George Hardesty
  • Katie b 1862 d 1953. Mar Maurice Cunningham and Edward Schenberg
  • Agnes b 1865 d 1949. Mar Henry Seegar
  • James b 1868 d 1946. Single
  • Nellie b 1872 d 1953. Mar William Madel
  • Josie b 1874 d 1893
  • William b 1876 d 1923. Single

Michael was a porter in 1867, the same occupation as Richard and John. He died 1899 and his burial record stated he was born in Tipperary. His death notice does not mention his parents.

John Heade b 1832 and Mary Anne Broderick then Alice Norris/McSweeney

John and Mary Broderick married Cape Girardeau 1863.

Mary Ann died 1870 in Cape Girardeau City.

John Hade b 1832 and Alice b 1840 married in 1873. The marriage cert did not provide names of parents and only stated that they had both been married previously. The only child found of John’s was:

  • Mary b 1855, Missouri

They were in Main St in 1880 and Broadway in 1900.  The 1900 census showed that Alice had 4 children with 2 living.  John arrived in 1848 and Alice 1850.

William Hayde b 1835

There is no sign of William after his baptism in Dunnamaggan parish.

Children of James b abt 1902 and Margaret Morphy

Patrick Heade b 1825 and Catherine O’Brien

Although Patrick’s baptism was not recorded in the church records (as records only started in 1826), their marriage record in 1853 confirmed Patricks’ parents as James and Margaret Morphy. This proves the link to Dunnamaggan parish.

Their children were:

  • Margaret b 1854, Missouri d 1930. Mar Snell
  • Hanora b 1855 d 1943. Mar Matt Cohen
  • Ellen b 1857 d 1927
  • James b 1859 d 1932. Mar Margaret Cronin
    • Henry G b 1887. D 1931. Mar Faye Hutton
  • Mary b 1862 d 1862
  • Alice b 1864 d 1897. Mar Michael Mullany
  • William b 1865 d 1905. Mar Maud Parker
    • Harry b 1892
  • Mary 2 b 1867 d 1867

Patrick was a drayman in 1860 as Haid and Hade in 1870 with same occupation. Patrick died 1873 and James and William Heade were boarding with others in 1880.

Margaret Head b 1827

Mar John Walsh 1850 in Kilkenny.

Margaret and Richard were twins.

Richard Heade b 1827 and Bridget Walsh b 1830

Their 1860 marriage record confirmed Richard’s parents as James and Margaret. Their children were:

  • Margaret b 1863 d 1949
  • Ellen b 1869 d 1887
  • Richard G b 1872. D 1927. Mar Katherine Davey
    • Richard P Heade b 1898 mar Fern Gossett
    • Bernice Anna Heade b 1900
  • William M b 1877. Single in 1900

Richard was a porter in 1870 and a janitor in 1895 (both a Heade). He died in 1895 and his will listed his children as Margaret, Richard and William.  Bridget had died before 1895.

There is a theory that he may have served in the Missouri cavalry (as Head) during the civil war. However, date of birth and spouse names do not match so I doubt this.

Thomas Hade b 1830 and Hanora Cahill b 1845

  • Patrick F b 1867 d 1912 single. Blacksmith
  • Mary b 1869
  • Nellie b 1871
  • James J b 1874 d 1917 single
  • Maggie b 1876
  • Thomas P b 1879 d 1919 single. Blacksmith
  • John M b 1884 d 1914 single. Blacksmith
  • William A b 1887 d 1915 single

They lived in Adolf Street in 1880, two doors away from Winifred below.

I have not found their marriage records nor Thomas’s death record.

In 1900, they were in Chouteau Ave.  Hanora had 9 children of which 6 were living.  5 of these were the sons who were still with them and were all single. They had been married for 31 years (mar 1869) and they had both arrived in 1854.

Thomas was a blacksmith in 1870, a horse shoer in 1880 and 1900 and the sons all adopted the same trade. None of the sons seemed to have married.

Thomas died 1909.

In 1920, Hanora was a widow with 5 children alive then.

John Heade b 1834 and Ellen O’Connor b 1836

John’s death record states his date of birth as 24 June 1835. His parents are stated as unknown.  There is no John Heade (or variant) recorded in the Irish church records for anything around this date.  I have assumed that he is the John Headd baptised Dunnamaggan 27 April 1834 and that the illiteracy at the time caused the distortion in dates.

I have not found a marriage cert.

  • Mary b 1861, Missouri
  • James b 1863. Mar Margaret Naughton[1]
    • Ellen Mary b 1894
    • Joseph Daniel b 1896. Mar Henrietta Wurdack
      • Joan V b 1931
      • Madeline b 1932
    • John A b 1898
    • Mary Ellen b 1901
  • Kate b 1866
  • Agatha b 1869
  • John b 1872 d 1915. Mar Ellen Schild
  • Ellen b 1875
  • Joseph b 1878
  • Leander William b 1878

John was a porter in 1860 (as Hade), a corn merchant in 1870 (as Heade) and a labourer in 1880 (as Heade). They lived at Pacific Street in 1880 and 3127 School St in later years.

In 1900 John and Ellen were in Jefferson St with John and Ellen.  Ellen had 6 children and all were living.  They had been married 40 years (mar 1860). John arrived in 1848 and Ellen in 1849.

John died in 1917 and Ellen in 1920.

James Earl Hade b 1836 and Winifred O’Keefe b 1838

I have assumed that James is another son as he and Winifred were living next door to Thomas and Hanora in 1870 and 1880.  I have not found any marriage record to confirm parents’ names and none of the death records note any parents names.

  • Patrick b 1859, Missouri – Teamster and policeman. D 1923. Mar Cecelia Allen1884 (d 1906) and then Margaret

      • Elizabeth J b 1938
    • Raymond b 1893 d 1916
  • Ellen/Nellie b 1866
  • Mary b 1869

James was a teamster in 1860 and died 1897. It appears they divorced and Winifred married Patrick Sullivan about 1874 and had 2 children to him in the late 1870s. In 1900, she and Patrick were in Manchester Ave, St Louis. She arrived in 1839 (or 1859?) and had 9 children of which 7 were still alive.

A John Fitzpatrick aged 30 was boarding with them in 1860.  A Michalel Fitzpatrick was with Patrick and Rosanna in 1850.  Is there a family connection?

William Haid b 1836

There is no sign of William after his baptism in Dunnamaggan parish.

Ellen Head b 1838

Ellen possibly mar Patrick Hearn in Dunamaggan in 1864. It’s probably more likely that she mar Patrick Bryen in St Louis in 1855.

Other Families in St Louis

Patrick

John Hayde b 1832 and Bridget Brennan b 1834

John’s 1914 death cert noted his father as Patrick with mother unknown. I don’t think this is the same Patrick as below as the dates don’t quite fit and there is no sign of John being with Patrick and Rosanna in the 1850 census and the 1900 census recorded him as arriving in 1850.

The only John born to a Patrick, in the approximate time period, that I can find in the Irish church records is a John Head b 1828 to a Patt and Judith Lanigan in Gortnahoe parish. This a strong possibility as other family members from Gorthanoe emigrated to Chicago in the 1850s.  Could they be linked?

John and Bridget must be closely linked to the others as they all lived close together at the time of the 1860 census.

Their children were:

  • John b 1856, Missouri
  • Thomas O b 1857
  • Catherine b 1860
  • Mary J b 1863
  • Thos G b 1867, d 1867
  • Bridget b 1868
  • Elly b 1869
  • Thomas b 1874

John married Bridget Brennan at St Louis in 1854 as Hayde. Unfortunately the marriage record does not note the names of the parents. They lived in Carondelet. Bridget died 1877 and John remarried Mary E. The 1880 census recorded the parents as being born Carondelet and the children as being born in Tipperary. I suspect the reverse is true.

John and Mary had Edward Hade in 1880 however he only lived for 5 days.

In 1900 John and Mary E were with Tom in Carondelet. They had been married for 23 years (mar 1877). Mary had 7 children and 1 (Tom) had survived. John had arrived in 1850 and Mary in 1855.

John served in the civil war and got a pension in 1890.

Patrick Head b abt 1813 and Rosanna Riley b 1820

  • Martin Head b 1846 Louisiana.

This family was the only one in the 1850 census. They were also Head in 1860 as was Martin in 1880.

A Michael Fitzpatrick aged 22 was boarding with them at the time of the 1850 census.  He could be a relative or close friend. As mentioned above, a John Fitzpatrick was with James and Winifred in 1860.

Jane and Mary Riley (aged 16 and 14) b Mass were also staying with them and next door were Michael and John Riley (aged 22 and 21).

Patrick Head died 1885, a widow aged 72 (b 1813). He died of asthma and was living at Garfield and buried Calvary cemetery.

I found his marriage to Rosanna Riley in 1840 in Hamilton Ohio. No parents names were recorded on this.

As he was the first arrival in the country, and lived close by all the others in 1860, he must be the first of the family to emigrate and blaze the trail for the others. It is interesting how he was in Ohio in 1840, Louisiana (New Orleans) in 1846 and then St Louis in 1850.

The 1840 census has a Patrick Head in Hamilton, Ohio. This census only had the heads of the family and numbers of others in the household.  This entry shows a family of 8 males and 3 females.

A Patrick Head arrived in New York in 1833 aged 20 (b 1813).  This could be his arrival.

[1] Margaret was born Co Mayo according to a descendant.

The first census of Ireland in 1659 did not show any records with relevant surnames in the Carlow area.

The same applies to the Hearth Money Records of the late 1600s.

The DNA of a descendant from a Carlow family shows similarities to families from Tipperary and Kildare/Wicklow. It seems likely that some time after the 1600s, Hayde families from Tipperary moved North to Carlow and further north west.

In 1770, a Patrick Heade leased land from Christopher Walker for 31 years. At the time Catholics could not lease land for longer than 31 years.

In the Catholic Convert Rolls for Carlow in 1790, Elizabeth Walker from Ballylennon, wife of Christopher Walker, converted from Catholicism to Protestantism. From this it can be assumed that the Walker family had some sympathy for their Catholic tenant farmers and ensured that their leases were properly documented.

In 1819, Christopher Walker, late sgt of Carlow Regiment of Militia, provided a lease to John Hade of 5 acres. The land was leased for the natural lives of John and his sons William and Patrick.  The lease was witnessed by Thomas Hade, who was probably his brother who served in the Carlow Militia with Christopher Walker.

Elizabeth Walker died, a widow, in the early 1800s and she gifted most of her assets to charities and moved to Dublin prior to her death.

Richard Heade, John Hade and Thomas Hade signed Oaths of Allegience to the Crown authorities at Burton Hall in 1797. John and Thomas would have been the the two sons of Patrick at Ballylennon in 1830. Richard is not in the parish records and is probably a brother of Patrick’s.

Thus the early Carlow families were probably:

  • Patrick b circa 1750 at Ballylennon
    • John b circa 1775 at Ballylennon
      • William b circa 1800
      • Patrick b circa 1800
    • Michael b circa 1775 at Rutland
    • Thomas b circa 1777 at Ballylennon
  • Richard b circa 1750
    • John circa 1775 at Ballyvergal
    • Patrick b circa 1770 at Straboe

Ballylennon, Ballyvergal and Rutland (Urglin) are within a mile of each other while Straboe is 5 miles away.

I know from DNA tests on descendants that the DNA of this family is very similar to the families that originated in Tipperary therefore the Carlow families originated in Tipperary and moved north.  There are many theories as to why but none yet proven. One theory that has some substance relates to the history of granite in the area. Large extractions of granite took place in the 1700s and it is possible, given that some of the Hayde Tipperary families I have found were masons, that this work attracted the family from Tipperary.

In the 1830s, at the time of the Tithe taxes, there were 5 relevant families living in 3 locations in the Carlow area: These were:

Ballylennon and Rutland (or Urglin)

  • John Hayde at Ballylennon, on 5 acres owned by Hon W F Tighe
  • Thomas Hayde at Ballylennon, on 2 acres owned by William Burton
  • Michael Hayde at Rutland, on 3 acres owned by John Duckett

Ballyvergal

  • John Hayde, on 8 acres owned by William Burton

Straboe

  • Patrick Hade, on 5 acres, 1 of which was untitheable

Records from the Tighe Carlow estate between 1825 and 1859 are available at the National Library of Ireland in Dublin. I need to review these on a future visit to Dublin.

The Catholic parish records started in 1774 (Carlow and Grague), 1787 (Carlow) and 1806 (Tinryland).  These are the earliest records.  There is no sign of them in the area in the 1600s. The family trees outlined below have been constructed from these and other available records.

The only entries in parish records that aren’t outlined below are:

  • The baptism of Richard Hayd or Hayes in 1777 to Mich and Sarah Roney (I suspect this is Hayes and not related)
  • John Heade who was a witness at a marriage in Little Pollerton in 1779
  • The Marriage of Margaret Heade to William O’Brien in 1778 at Dublin St. Elizabeth Heade was a witness.

These are all in the Carlow and Grague parish records. They are also the only records for this parish. They went from 1774 to 1786, when the Carlow, Cathedral of the Assumption parish records started.

In 1852, the families were:

  • Ballylennon
    • Patrick Hade at # 6 (4 acres owned by William Burton)
    • Michael Hade at # 1 (1 acre owned by Rt Hon Tighe)
  • Ballyvergal
    • Patrick Hade at # 11 (8 acres owned by William Burton)
  • Rutland
    • Michael Hade at 2a (3 acres owned by Rt Hon Tighe)
  • Pollerton Little
    • Michael Hade at # 6 (1 acre owned by Rt Hon Tighe)
  • Pollerton Road, in the Town of Carlow
    • John Hayde at # 42 (a small house and garden)

These places can be seen on the map below:

Ballylennon, Rutland and Pollerton

The Griffiths map below shows where the Ballylennon, Ballyvergal, Rutland and Pollerton Little families were in the 1850s.

The Ballyvergal families were on the western side of the road from Carlow to Palatine while the Ballylennon families were to the east. Pollerton Little is to the south west of the Ballylennon cross roads while Rutland is to the south east.

This family tree is:

  • Patrick b abt 1750. Leased land in 1770 from Christopher Walker.
    • John b abt 1775. On 5 acres at Ballylennon in 1830.
      • William b abt 1800. Desmond Norton of the University College of Dublin has some records of the agents that managed Burton Hall and other properties owned by the Burton family in 1840. The last two families above (William b abt 1800 and James b abt 1800) may not be correctly linked to Patrick.  Their connection is unknown and I have put them here for completeness.

In the valuation records for Ballyvergal for 1840, there was reference to a Peter Hade. There is no reference to him in the parish records and he probably emigrated to America in 1847 with James.  They were probably brothers of Patrick and John. They settled in Flushing, New Jersey and their descendants are outlined in the Carlow families in NY Posts page.

The detailed research on the area can be viewed at Carlow Families.

As mentioned in the research notes above, there is a place in Carlow called Ballyhade.  It is just north of the town of Palatine which is close by Ballylennon and Ballyvergal. In a 1790 map it was shown as Ballyheath.  I have asked people who have lived in Palatine if they know of the origins of the name and have also inquired at the Carlow library.  I have not found any information on the derivation of this name so do not know if there is any connection between this place and our name.

The Carlow family tree can be seen at https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/tree/51535377/family

Most of the earlier arrivals in America seem to have come from this branch of the family. The early origins are outlined in the Carlow Posts page.

The following high level summary should help make understanding of the linkages easier as regards the families that went to America:

Descendants of family probably from Ballyvergal

In the 1850 census, there was a Peter (b 1822) and James (b 1822) Hayde.  They arrived together on the Siddons on 24 July 1847 as Hade. By 1850 they had both married with infant children and were living at Flushing, Queens.

Peter and James were presumably brothers. I have not found them in the Irish records but they are probably children of John b 1775.

Peter (b 1822) and Ann Black

Peter married Ann and they had:

  • John Nicholas (b 1847)
  • Richard (b 1848)
  • Mary Cecelia (b 1850). Mar Prentiss Bedell Fowler 1878. D 1898
  • Patrick (b 1854) and Mary
    • ANO
    • ANO
    • ANO
  • Anne (b 1855)
  • Jane (b 1859)
  • Frank (b 1861)

Peter was naturalized in 1855. They were in the 1850 census as Hayde and the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census in Flushing as Hade.  In 1880 Ann was listed as a widow living at Redan St, Flushing. By 1892 she was a Hayde while Patrick and Mary were Hade.  Richard was in the 1900 census also as Hayde. He was single and boarding with others.

The baptisms of John Nicholas, Richard, Mary Cecelia, and Anne are in the records of St Michaels Church in Flushing as Hade.

Patrick Hade was in the Manhattan Home for Aged in 1918 and he died later that year. He married Mary in 1883 and according to the 1900 census they had 3 children none of whom were living in 1900.

I have not found any living descendants.

James (b 1822) and Catherine

James married Catherine and they had:

  • Mary (b 1846) – Ireland (not in 1850 census)
  • John (b 1848) – NY
  • Andrew (b 1848)
  • Jane (b 1852)
  • Anne (b 1854)
  • Nicholas (b 1856)
  • Catherine (b 1858) – Illinois
  • Peter (b 1863)

James was naturalized in 1855. They were in Flushing (as Hayde) in 1850, and Kane, Illinois in 1860 and 1880 (as Head). It appears that they moved to Illinois around 1857/58. I have not found any living descendants of this family.

Descendants of John Hayde (b 1775) from Ballylennon

John had two sons who continued to farm land at Ballylennon. They were:

  • William b circa 1800
  • Patrick b circa 1800 and Elizabeth Nolan

Descendants of Patrick (b 1800) and Elizabeth Nolan

William and Bridget Kirwin

A grand-son of Williams’s, a William Hade (b 1869), married Bridget Kirwin in Ireland in 1905 and arrived in NY on The Arabic on 20 June 1909 with their daughter Mary Patricia (b 1906). They were intending to stay with a sister, Barb Campbell (who had paid William’s fare), at 853 Amsterdam Ave, NY.

William was a groom in the 1901 Irish census and was recorded as that in the arrival records.

In 1915, they were in Bradford Ave, Queens and had another daughter, Agnes, who was 20 days old.  William was a grocery driver.

He was a coachman from Flushing in the WW1 Draft registration papers.

By 1930 William was a night watchman and they were living in Roosevelt Ave, Queens.

Descendants of Thomas b 1777 and Catherine Nixon from Ballylennon

Thomas and Catherine had a family in the early 1800s. Thomas died 1839 and Catherine in 1848. The eldest son, Richard, was in Dublin in 1854 and the four younger brothers (John, William, James and Michael) emigrated after their mother died and settled in Elizabeth Union, New Jersey.

John Hade (b 1818) and Elizabeth Byrnes

John and Elizabeth married in NJ in 1859 as Heade (wit by William Heade and Mary Heade[1]) and had:

  • Thomas b 1858 (NJ) – clerk in 1886/7 and Mary Beglan
    • Thomas b 1891 Mar Genevieve Kirk
  • James b 1861 – clerk in 1879-1887 (may be a John James)
  • William b 1863 – clerk 1884-1891

John died 25 July 1864 during the civil war. He was an oil cloth worker in the Draft Registration records. His parents were stated in his death records to be either Thomas and Catherine or Thomas and Mary. I have assumed the former.

Elizabeth was with William in South Street in 1880 and 1900 and Elizabeth Ave in 1910.

William Hade (b 1821) and Catherine Hickson (b 1853)

William and Catherine had:

  • Catherine Anna b 1853 (NJ)
  • Thomas William b 1856 (d 1895) mar Jane/Jennie Smith 1881
    • Thomas W b 1882, d 1899
    • John James b 1885 and Grace Pier
      • John b 1918
      • Thomas William b 1920
      • Edward b 1926
    • Walter Charles b 1883. Mar Alice
      • Evelyn Dorothy b 1906
      • Edward b 1908
    • Edward b 1890 and Marie Steingass
      • Walter b 1912
      • Marie b 1913
      • Harriet b 1914
  • Mary b 1856 (twin with William). Mar John Rogers 1875
  • John Richard b 1860, d 1860
  • Michael James b 1861, d 1866

William and Catherine were probably in the 1850 NY census and William was a waiter.

William died 27 June 1862 during the civil war. He was an oil cloth worker in the Draft Registration records and was a sergeant when he died. Catherine was with Thomas and Mary and John Rogers in Elizabeth Ave in 1880. Catherine died 1888, b 1825.

James Hade (b 1828) and Mary

James and Mary had:

  • Elizabeth b 1856 (NJ)
  • Thomas b 1858 (waiter and steward)
  • William b 1860 (clerk)
  • John Joseph b 1862 (clerk)
  • Mary Catherine b 1868, d 1869
  • Helen b 1868

James was an oil cloth worker in the Civil War Draft Registration papers.

James (coachman) and Mary were with Elizabeth and Thomas in 7th Ave NYC in 1880.

Mary was in 3rd St, Manhattan with William, John, Thomas and Helen in 1900 as Hade.

Michael Hade (b 1831) and Ellen

Michael and Ellen had:

  • Julianne b 1854 (NJ). Mar Geo Brophy
  • Kate b 1857. Mar Daniel Kirk 1877

Michael was an oil cloth worker in the Civil War Draft Registration papers. He died in 1881.

Michael and Ellen could possibly have arrived on the Isaac-Wright in October 1848. The records state Martin and Ellen but the Martin could be a Michael.  The ages fit. There is however no record of their marriage in Ireland.

Michael and Ellen were at Oak Street 1872-1891.

Descendants of John (b 1775) from Ballyvergal

Descendants of Patrick (b 1800) and Cath Burrows from Ballyvergal

Patrick and Cath had six children.  The two eldest sons appeared to take over the family farm while the two youngest, Thomas and Patrick emigrated.

Thomas (b 1835)

Thomas (b 1835) and Patrick (b 1837) had arrived by 1860. Thomas probably arrived 1853 on the Edward Hanly. Patrick and Thomas were both in Flushing together in 1860 as Hade.  Thomas was naturalized in1856.

Thomas was recorded as Hayde in 1870 in NYC and was working as a man servant. There is no obvious trace of him after this census.

Patrick (b 1837) and Sarah

Patrick was naturalized in 1868. He married Sarah and by 1870 was in Moreau, Saratoga with two children – as Hayde.  By 1880 Patrick had died and Sarah and the three children by then (Thomas, Mary and Alice) were in Queensbury, Warren. They were also there in 1892. In 1900, their son Thomas Hayde (b 1862) was a carpenter boarding at Kingsbury Town. By 1920 he was in the Warren County Almhouse – as Hayde.

George and Mary Nolan

George, who was an older brother of Patrick and Michaels’, had a son who also emigrated.  This was Patrick James (b 1861). He arrived 1895. In 1900 he was in Newport, Rhode Island as a coachman. He married Margaret Hanlon in October 1900 and by 1910 they were in Bergen, New Jersey where he was still a coachman.

In 1911, Margaret and the children returned to NY after what was probably a trip to Ireland.

They had an extensive family and descendants are mainly in NJ.

Descendants of John (b 1810) and Bridget Horahan from Rutland

A grandson, Michael Joseph (b 1880) from Pollerton Road arrived on Celtic on 2 May 1908 with his sister Mary (b 1883).

In 1910, Michael was staying in Hudson, New Jersey, with an uncle John Curran and his family. I’m not sure of his movements after this.

Descendants of Michael (b 1775) from Rutland

Michael had two sons.  Michael who was in Pollerton in the 1850s and Peter. Peter was probably in the Ballyvergal valuation books in 1840 on Burton owned land.

Peter (b 1818) and Bridget

By 1860 Peter (b 1818), a cartman, and Bridget were also in Flushing.  They started a family in NY by 1847 but don’t appear in the 1850 census.

Peter and Bridget had:

  • Johanna (b 1854)
  • Peter (b 1865)
  • Thomas (b 1865)
  • Mary (b 1865)

There is no sign of them in 1870 or later censuses.

Descendants of Patrick (b 1775) and Margaret Curran from Straboe

Descendants of Thomas (b 1813) and Mary Doyle from Straboe

Thomas and Mary had 11 children, two of whom emigrated to America – Ellen (b 1858) and Bridget (b 1861).  Two other children had children who also emigrated.

Bridget Hade (b 1861)

Bridget married Michael O’Toole in 1891 in NY.  In 1910 and 1920 they were in 503 W 145th Street.  The 1920 record showed that Bridget arrived 1885 and was naturalized 1900. The 1910 record however said she arrived 1882.  This confirms that she arrived on SS Germanic on 28 Aug 1882 aged 21.

Ellen Hade (b 1858)

Ellen was in the 1940 census as widowed and living with Joseph O’Toole (son of Michael O’Toole and Bridget above), her nephew in Chatterton Ave, Bronx. Patricia B Hade, a single cousin born in Ireland (b 1883) was also living with them.

Daniel (b 1847) and Julia

A son, Daniel Hade (b 1847), and Julia Allen had 4 children of which two emigrated, Mary (b 1890) and Thomas (b 1900). Mary arrived 1909 and was to stay with aunt Mrs Toole at 503 W 145th St. Thomas arrived 1925 from Montreal and married Margaret Murphy 5 Feb 1928 in NY. He was naturalized in 1932 when they were living 500 W 169th.

Patrick (b 1842) and Mary Hade

Another son was Patrick who married Mary Hade. Their children included Thomas (b 1872) who married Anne Kirwan and Bridget (b 1888).

  • Thomas Hade (b 1872) and Anne Kirwin and their children

Thomas (b 1872) and Anne were in Pollerton Road, Carlow, in the 1911 census with their 4 children Mary (b 1895), Ellen (b 1897), Michael (b 1900) and Bridget (1902). They were in Pollerton Road with a brother William and parents Patrick (b 1842) and Mary Hade.

Their son Michael, arrived Boston on SS Samaria from Queenstown on 23 June 1924. He was to stay with his aunt, Mrs B Kirwan, 77 Bradford St, Flushing, NY.

Bridget arrived in NY on SS Baltic from Queenstown on 28 Nov 1926.  She was a nurse and was to stay with her brother Michael at 503 145 St, NY (see also Bridget and Mary above at same address

  • Bridget Hade (b 1888)

Bridget was in Pollerton Road in 1911 and arrived 6 Apr 1912 on SS Baltic. She was to stay with cousin Will Hade at 318 E 37th Street. She travelled with Mary Norris (Bridget’s eldest sister Mary married a Norris).  It is not clear which Will Hade she stayed with. Bridget was naturalized 25 April 1925 and at the time was single and living at 421 W 113th Street.

Bridget also arrived back in NY in 1936 and 1939 in Boston, presumably after a trip back to Ireland.

Descendants of Michael Hade (b 1813) and Mary Doyle from Straboe

Michael and Mary had six children, two of which had children that emigrated to America. These were:

John (b 1850) and Anne Curran and their children

In 1901, John and Anne were in Straboe with seven of their 11 children. Two had died and two had left Ireland.  Their eldest son had joined the British army and their eldest daughter Mary (b 1884) married James Scully in New York in 1915 and they settled in Newport, Rhode Island.

The 1920 census noted Mary arrived 1908 and was naturalized in 1916, the same year as her husband. The 1930 census however says she arrived in 1910.

She probably arrived in NY on 28 Aug 1911 on the SS Caronia having previously lived in NY between 1909 and 1911.

Thomas Hade (b 1852) and Mary Gilfoyle and their children.

In 1901, Thomas and Mary were in Straboe with their six surviving children. One son had died.

Their eldest son, Michael Joseph (b 1882) arrived in NY on the Celtic on 2 May 1908 with two cousins.  He was to stay with his uncle, John Gilfoyle in Patterson New Jersey. In 1910, 1920 and 1930, Michael was staying with John Gilfoyle and family who had arrived in 1888, in Patterson, New Jersey.

His WW1 draft registration cards showed Mrs Gilfoyle from Paterson, NJ, as his nearest relative.

[1] This is probably the wife of James.

The first census of Ireland in 1659 did not show any records with relevant surnames in the Kildare or Wicklow counties.

The same applies to the Hearth Money Records of the late 1600s and the Religious Census of 1766.

However, derivations of the name appear in the Ballymore Eustace parish records in the 1780s and the Dunlavin parish in 1815. Both these dates reflect when these parish records first started. These parishes bordered each other and were around Hollywood in Wicklow, a town just south of the bigger town of Ballymore Eustace in Kildare and north of Dunlavin in Wicklow.

In the parish records there are several families in the Ballymore Eustace parish and a smaller number in the Dunlavin parish.

The Public Record Office records of wills showed an Owen Heade from Snugborough (by Donard) who died intestate in 1769. (Owen is Eoghan in Irish or Eugenius in latin)

By the 1830s there were three families in the Skelp, Newtown area of Ballymore Eustace and three in the Blackhill, Friarhill, Donard area of Dunlavin. These were:

  • Two brothers, John (b abt 1800) and Mary Neil and Michael (b 1786) and Julia Murphy at Skelp/Scalp. They were sons of William (b abt 1860) and Anne. They shared 259 acres with several others.
  • Richard (b abt 1760) and Hanna on 44 acres at Newtown.
  • Pat (b abt 1795) and Eleanor Keoghe on 1 acre at Fryarhill.
  • John on 16 acres at Blackhill.
  • Denis (b 1821) on 1 acre at Donard. He was the son of James and Rose.

As can be seen from the map below, while these villages were in different parishes they were actually very close together on the borders of these two parishes.

This presence in the early records suggest that they may have been in the area in the early 1700s, and perhaps earlier although in numbers that did not warrant a mention in the census or Heath Money records.

Descendants in Dublin also seem to have originated from this area and DNA tests have supported this assumption.

I have developed three trees around descendants from this area:

  • Tree # 3. This is the tree that shows the early presence in this area and the descendants that can be traced from these families.
  • Tree # 16. This covers the following families that are assumed to originate from this area but cannot, in all cases, be proven from these records:
    • Christopher b in circa 1780. He was in Dublin in the early 1800s and married Margaret Byrne in 1806. They had a family in the early 1800s in Dublin.
    • William b circa 1815. He married Catherine Vins in Dunlavin parish in 1838 and they had a family in Dublin in the 1840s.
    • James b circa 1818. He married Bridget Flanagan and had a family in Dublin in the 1840s
    • Patrick b circa 1824. He married Ester Riley and had a family firstly in Ballymore Eustace in the 1840s/1850s and then in Dublin.
    • Michael b circa 1830. He married Margaret or Mary Maher and they had a family in Dublin in the 1850s.

These families have been grouped as they lived in similar areas of Dublin at a similar time period.

  • Tree # 18. This covers:
    • James Hayde and Patrick Hayde who were born in the early 1800s, had similar occupations and had families in Dublin the 1840s.

These have been grouped separately from Tree # 16 as they are clearly related and were in the same area of Dublin at the same time period and are also assumed to originate from the Kildare/Wicklow area.

The DNA of descendants from Trees # 3 and 18 are similar to that of Hayde families from Ballinure, Tipperary. There is therefore a proven link to Tipperary but the specific details are unknown.

The DNA for a descendant from Tree # 16, while different to those of Trees # and 18 is similar to the DNA from a Hayde family from Fethard, Tipperary.

The areas referred to in Tree # 3 are all around Dunlavin, Hollywood and Ballymore Eustace. These can be seen around Hollywood above.

These families and their descendants are:

At the time of the Tithes in 1833, Michael and John Hayde were jointly farming 260 acres with John Murphy, Peter Farrell, Luke Butler, Pat Mowlem and James Kelly.

By the time of the Griffiths in 1854 the same 260 acres were being farmed by Michael and his brother William and John Murphy, Luke Butler, James Hegarty, Richard Kelly and Matthew Farrell. The land was owned by the Rev Lord J Beresford. The Beresford family arrived in Ireland with the armies of James 1 in the early 1600s and were granted large tracks of land (mainly around Waterford) by the king.

Descendants continued to farm this land into the 1900s. Michael who died in 1929 appears to be the last Hayde on this land.

John, who was in Crehelp in 1854, was on 4 acres owned by Richard Kelly. He died in 1883 and his son Thomas took over the property until he died in 1946. There is no sign of any descendants after this date and as the brothers were single (and in their 50s at the time of the 1911 census) it can be assumed that this branch of the family died out.

2) Richard and Hanna. In Newtown in 1833 as Heade

  • Bridget Heade b 1783
  • Anna Julia Head b 1785, Newtown
  • Margaret Head b 1787, Hollywood
  • Jacobus (James) Headde b 1790, Newtown. James probably died as Hade at Dragoonhill in 1866
  • Thomas Head b 1792, Newtown. In Newtown in 1854 as Hayde
    • No sign of descendants
  • Anna Head b 1795, Newtown

At the time of the Tithes Richard farmed 44 acres and by 1854 Thomas was farming 46 acres.  The land was also owned by the Rev Lord J Beresford. Thomas disappeared from the valuation records in the 1860s.

3) Eugene (Owen) and Rosa.

  • Jacobus (James) Head b 1786, Rathattin (a village close to Scalp) – known as Rabattin in the Tithes.
  • Patrick Head b 1789, Rathattin

There was no sign of this family in the 1830s Tithe or subsequent records.

Dunlavin Parish

4) Henry and Hannah/Judith.

  • Anne Hede b 1816, Milltown
  • William Heade b 1817, Blackhill
  • Michael Heade b 1821, Dunlavin

There was no sign of this family in the 1830s Tithe records. There was only the John Heade on 16 acres at Blackhill in 1825. However, he does not feature in any parish records. Perhaps he was a Henry John and they are therefore the same person.

A Nicholas Hade married Mary Dowling in this parish in 1837.  In Mullycagh Lower in 1854 as Hade. Their children were:

  • Rose Heade b 1840, Dunlavin
  • Jane Heade b 1842
  • Henry Heade b 1845
  • Thomas Hade b 1848
  • Mary Hade b 1851
  • Brigida Hayde b 1865, Mullcagh

I suspect Nicholas is another son of Henry and Hannah born circa 1817 as the dates and location fit and one of his sons’ was named Henry, which was an unusual family name at the time.

A Patrick Heade from Mullcagh married Catherine Cuff/Cook in Newbridge parish in 1839. He is probably another son of Henry and Hannah given the reference to Mullcagh. They were in Dowdestown Great as Hayde in 1851. Their children were:

  • James Hade b 1840
  • Patt Hade b 1842
  • Mary Hade b 1845
  • Ester Hade b 1847
  • John Hade b 1849
  • Margaret Hade b 1852
  • Catherine Hade b 1854, Dowdestown
  • Peter Hade b 1857, Dowdestown. Mar Mary Kinsella 1901

5) Patrick (a tailor) and Eleanor Keoghe. In Fryarhill in 1825 as Heade

  • Rose Heade b 1817
  • Richard Heade b 1820
  • Patrick Heade b 1822. Mar Mary Lynch Ballymore Eustace parish in 1840. He was a mason in 1881. They were in Commons (by Dowdestown) as Hayde in 1851. Their children were:
    • Ellen Hade b 1841
    • Bridget Hade b 1843
    • Philip Hade b 1845. Mar Elizabeth Kavanagh, Dublin 1874
    • Mary Hade b 1850
    • James b 1852. Mar Kate Holden, Dublin 1881
    • Judith Hade b 1855, Tipperkevin
    • Jacob Hade b 1857, Tipperkevin
  • Denis Heade b 1829. Served in the army (63rd Foot) from 1847 to 1868. He was a tailor.  Mar Elizabeth Phillipson in Cumberland, Carlisle in 1849 and (when widower) Bridget Butler/Cavanagh Dublin 1868.
    • Daughter b 1869
  • Sarah Heade b circa 1840
  • Thomas Heade b circa 1840. Mar Maria Cahill in Roundwood, Rathdrum 1862. Parents were from Crehelp. Thomas was a shoemaker. D 1911
    • Patrick Haid/Hayde b 1863. Mar Ellen. Emigrated to USA
    • Eleanor Haid 1864
    • Denis Hade/Haid b 1866. Mar Mary Heim. Moved to Liverpool. This family is described further in the Liverpool Posts page.
    • Thomas Hade b 1867. D 1880
    • Mary Christina Hayde b 1870. Emigrated to USA
    • Joanne Hade b 1871
    • Julia Heade b 1873. Emigrated to USA
    • Rosanna Hade b 1875. Emigrated to USA
    • Sarah Hade b 1877. D 1907
    • Anne Hade b 1880
    • Elizabeth Hade b 1882

At the time of the Tithes, Patrick was on a small 1 acre plot of land. It’s no surprise his descendants moved elsewhere.

6) James and Rose from Donard.

  • Denis Heade b 1821, Donard. In Donard 1833 and 1834. Donard is just south of Blackhill/Fryarhill. Mar Anne Hayden. Ann probably owned dairy in Mary St, Rathmines 1851-72.

      • John Heade b 1864
      • Elizabeth Ann Heade b 1875
    • Mary
  • William Hayde b 1822. William served in US army between 1849 and 1854. Mar Elizabeth Kelly circa 1845 then Mar Mary O’Connell/Toomey in Dublin in 1878 (as a widower). He was in Francis St, Dublin at the time of the 1851 census and ran a dairy in New Row West, Dublin 1859-1871.
    • Johannes b 1847

Dublin Residents in 1664

In the 1800s, a list was made of residents from the 1664 Hearth Money Rolls. These later perished in the 1920s PRO fire.

The only slightly relevant entry (apart from Haydens) was Nicholas Hide, Lucan Towne (Townland), Lucan Parish, 2 hearths. There is however no record of any relevant descendants in the research undertaken in the 1800s onwards.

As described in the Irish Research Page, I have searched all the parish records together with directories, telephone books etc and constructed the trees described below. All the arrivals in the 1800s came from Kildare/Wicklow apart from a few from Tipperary and Carlow later in the century. This web page just focuses on the early arrivals. They can be summarised as:

  • Those that can be clearly traced to Kildare/Wicklow (Tree # 3)
  • Pat and James Hayde who were in Dublin in 1826, were probably from Kildare/Wicklow and who settled on the north side of Dublin (Tree # 18)
  • Those that probably relate to Kildare/Wicklow and are probably related to Tree # 3 and settled in the south side of Dublin (Tree # 16)
  • A family at Rathmines that is probably from Kildare/Wicklow
  • A family at Rathfarnham and Willbrook that is from ????

Tree # 3

This tree, as it relates to Dublin, reflects the ancestors who clearly originated in Kildare/Wicklow and can be linked together from the various records.

The other families in Dublin may also originate in Kildare/Wicklow but have their own tree references of Tree # 16 and # 18 as the connections to Tree # 3 are not proven.

The families in Dublin that are part of Tree # 3 are outlined in the Kildare/Wicklow posts page.

Tree # 18

In 1826 there was a major bank crisis in England which resulted in many textile factories in Dublin becoming uneconomic.  Many of these factories closed and the staff were unemployed.  Many of the newly unemployed men were used to repair roads in various parts of Dublin during the summer of 1826. James Hayde (a wool dyer with a family of 5) and Pat Hayde (a spinner with a family of 3) were in these records of labourers.

Tree # 18 is devoted to James and Patrick and their descendants.

James was living at 5 Newmarket and Pat at Tenters in 1826. These were areas in west Dublin just south of the river as can be seen on the 1829 Dublin map below.

James probably joined the British army (46th Foot) and was stationed in Canada in 1822. He was born 1799 in St Michans parish and was a tailor. He died in India in 1825. I’m not sure what happened to his family of 5.

There is no sign of their marriages or baptisms of children in the relevant Dublin parishes (St Nicholas and St Catherines). There were however other Hayde families in these parishes at the time and Pat and James may have moved from the Kildare/Wicklow area to join other family members in the area.

Patrick who had a family of 3 is presumably the father of two descendants married and had families at St Michan’s, St Mary’s Pro and St Paul’s parishes on the northside of the river in the 1850s. These parishes covered the streets in the 1829 map below:

These families were:

Michael b abt 1790 and Mary Conlon

Michael and Mary had two children in the St Mary’s Pro church. These were:

  • Cath Head b 1814
  • Patrick Head b 3 Bolton Court 1818

Apart from the parish, there is no obvious link to Patrick and James below.  They could be unrelated or perhaps Patrick b 1818 is the Patrick below.

Patrick b abt 1825 and Ann Loran

Patrick Heade and Ann married in St Mary’s Pro church in 1848. The marriage was noted as being ‘gratis’ in the parish record. Witnesses were John Keogh and Ester Johnson.

James and Sarah (below) were in this parish by 1846 so Patrick and Ann could perhaps have followed them.

Pat Haid signed the William Smith O’Brien petition in 1848 when living at Walshes Row. In the 1851 census Pat Haid was at Dorset St Upr, 6 Penders Court.

Patrick was in the workhouse in 1894 as a widower and a painter from Denmark St. Ann had died in 1878.

Their children were:

  • James Haid b 1850. Mar Elizabeth Walsh in 1861. James was a painter. He died 1887
    • Elizabeth Ester (Lillie) Hayde b 1880
    • Anne Josephine Haide b Summerhill 1881
    • Patrick Joseph Hayde b Mid Abbey St 1883
    • Michael James Hayde b Mid Abbey St 1885. A painter. Joined army 1905.  D 1917
  • Mary Haid b 1852. D 1912. Mar Leckey 1872 then McAuley 1881
  • Ann Heade b Walshes Row 1854 d 1906. Mar 1884
  • Rosanna Hayde b Upr Temple St 1857. Mar 1880
  • Bridget Heade b Walshes Row 1859 d 1859
  • Jane Haid b Dorset Court 1861 d 1861
  • Ester Haide b 1863. D 1915. M Fay 1883
  • Matthew Francis Heade b Penders Court 1864. D 1867

James b abt 1825 and Sarah Byrne

There is no record of their marriage.  This must have been circa 1846, before that of Pat.

Their first 3 children were bap in St Paul’s church as well as St Michan’s where the rest of their children, and those of Patricks’ were baptised. St Paul’s is west of St Michans and could reflect where they lived before moving east.  Also in St Paul’s church were the baptisms of Patt Haid (1780) and Thomas Head (1781) whose parents were Richard and Ann.  Could Richard and Ann be ancestors of Patrick and James?

Sarah was in the North Dublin workhouse in 1846 as a washerwoman living at 5 Penders Court, N City while husband James was a dealer.  In 1848 she was in the Board of Guardians records aged 18 (b 1830). She was in the workhouse again in 1897 (107 Summerhill) and 1902 (Coleraine St) as a widow. James had died in 1872.

They were not specifically mentioned in the 1851 census but Pat (above) was and it is possible that both families were recorded under the one entry.

Their children were:

  • Patrick Hayde b 1847. Mar Ellen Quin or Hunt.  Patrick was a news vendor. He died 1910 in a Dublin workhouse. They lived 21 and 34 Upper Tyrone St. Ellen d in Dublin workhouse in 1902. In 1898 Ellen was charged with begging. She was living 31 Upper Tyrone Street.
  • Michael Hayde b 1849. Mar Elizabeth Gallagher or Fitzpatrick in 1874. He was a painter and they lived 20 Upper Tyrone St. Michael was in Dublin workhouse in 1880 with acute small pox. He was living 21 Moore Street.  He died Dublin workhouse in 1891
    • Sarah Anne Hade b Moore Lane 1874. Prob d before 1861
    • Maria Heade b Moore Lane 1875
    • Ellen Hade b Henry Place 1877
    • Bridget Catherine Haide b Moore St 880
    • Sarah Anne Haide b Temple St 1881. Mar McKendrick 1904 and Keating 1917
    • Mary Haide b 1882. Mar James Barke
    • Elizabeth Hayde b Whites Lane 1884
    • Michael Hayde b 1890
  • Maria Haide b circa 1850. D 1925. Mar Patrick Doyle 1872
  • John Hayd b 1853
  • James Haide b Walshes Row 1855. Mar Ester Bremman in 1882. Ester b 1866, died in workhouse 1914. She was in Mountjoy prison in 1904 for being drunk. in 1896, Ester was in prison for neglecting her 3 children. Aged 35 living in Dispensary Lane.
    • James Christopher Hayde b Montgomery St 1882 (or 1886). Mar Elizabeth Keogh. James was a news vendor living at 4 Murphys Cottages when he joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in 1903. He died 1916. He was in Dublin workhouse in 1897 and 1906.
      • Patrick Joseph Hade b 1907
      • James Joseph Haide b 1908. Mar Margaret Hoey 1935. James was in Dublin workhouse in 1914. James was in electoral lists as Heade 1914 and 1915 at 5 Island St.
      • Daniel Haid b workhouse in 1910. D 1911 in Dublin workhouse
      • Luke Joseph Hayde b 1912. Mar Mary Deveraux in 1933 then Catherine Bolger 1949. A descendant has undertaken a DNA test and the results show that his DNA is very similar to these from Tipperary (Trees # 1, 9, and 10) and also from Tree # 3 which has Kildare/Wicklow origins.
      • Joseph Benedict Haide b 1915. Mar Mary Oates 1940
    • Michael Haide b 1884. D 1890
    • George Haid b 1885. D before 1911
    • Sarah A Hayde b 1886. D before 1911
    • Mary Ester Haide b Grenville St 1889. D 1889
    • John Joseph Haide b 1890. D 1894
    • Joseph Patrick Haide b Summerhill 1893 d 1968 Birmingham.  Mar Ann Tancred Dublin
    • Patrick Haide b 1895. D 1895
  • Sarah Haid b Penders Court 1861 d 1928
  • Teresa Haid b Dorset St 1863
    • George Haid b 1885

Both these families lived in the same areas.  They were in Walshes Row in the 1850s, Penders Court and Dorset St in the 1860s then Murphy’s Cottages and Summerhill in the 1890s.

Due to the DNA link noted above, it can be assumed therefore that these families moved from Kildare/Wicklow to Dublin in the late 1700s, having previously moved to Kildare/Wicklow from Tipperary.

Tree # 18 or 16

Thomas b circa 1820 and Rose Moyles

  • William Bernard Hade b 1843. Mar Joanne Whittaker 1869 Ballybrack, Dublin. In the parish records William was stated as being from Dorset St, Dublin and Rose was from Enniskerry, Co Wicklow.  Enniskerry is not far from the parish of Ballybrack in south Dublin. Interestingly, in the 1891 UK census Joanne was noted as being born Tipperary. In the civil records William was a coachmaker and his father Thomas a bootmaker.
    • Rose Teresa Hade b 1871. D 1871
    • Thomas James Hade b 1872 d1873
    • William John Hade b 1874 d 1889 Manchester

        • Roland b 1945 d 1946
        • Brian b 1946 d 1946

William and Joanna were in Manchester in 1881. Descendants settled in Manchester and have adopted Haide.

  • John Haide and Ann Quigley. M 1870 St Michan’s parish and also recorded in St Andrew’s parish. John was from 132 Upper Dorset St. Father was Thomas and mother was Rose.

This family could be linked to Pat and James above only because of the Dorset St connection.  It is also possible that they are more closely linked to families covered in Tree # 16 below.

Tree # 16

In the early 1800s, there were several families in the Dublin south parish records who all appeared to have some connection because of where they were living, some common names or other related factors. These families probably originated in the Kildare/Wicklow area and are probably related to the families in Trees # 3, 16 and 18 but the linkages are unclear. These were:

There are various records in the St Catherines (Meath Street), St Michaels (Lower Exchange Street) and St Andrews (Westland Row) Catholic parishes in the late 1700s and early 1800s that could  relate to these families. However the linkages are not clear.

Christopher Hade b 1768 who married Margaret Byrne in St Paul’s parish Dublin in 1806.

Christopher was in the North Dublin workhouse in 1840 and died there in 1844 aged 76 (b 1768). They mar in St Paul’s church in 1806 and when they had Bridget in 1807 and  Margaret in 1822 they were in St Michans which is an adjoining parish in north east Dublin where the families in tree # 18 were also living at the time.

His children were:

  • Bridget Heade b 1807 d 1807
  • Matthew Hade b 1818. Mar Mary Murphy b 1820 in 1844 in Australia. Matthew was convicted of being a pick pocket in Dublin in 1832 and was sentenced to 7 years in Australia.  He married there and subsequently settled in Australia. Mary was also a convict and had also been sentenced to 7 years in Australia. There are many Hade descendants in NSW, Australia that can be traced back to Matthew and Mary. Their children were:

Christopher is a very unusual name.  It only appears in the family in a small number of cases, as does Matthew.  Any users of these names therefore must have some connection. Possible connections include:

  • John Head b abt 1807 mar Bridget Flanigan in St Catherine’s
    • Mathew Head b 1835 St Michan’s
  • John Hade b circa 1810 mar Elizabeth Baxter 1837

    • James Hade b 1837, St Pauls, Dublin. Some researchers have suggested that James was in St Louis in 1860 and he mar Winifred had a family there.  I have outlined this family in the St Louis page.  It is a possibility but one thing that counts against this assumption is that the St Louis family did not use the name Matthew in any of their children. James in St Louis was also with other members of his family whereas in this tree they have stayed in Dublin.
    • Matthew Hayde b 1842. Mar Catherine Cassidy 1861
      • Christopher Hayde b 1862, St Pauls, Dublin
      • Matthew Hade b 1865
      • Martin E Hade b 1867
      • John Patrick Hade b 1868 d 1874
      • Stephen Joseph Hade b 1870 d 1874
    • Stephen Hade b 1845. A smith. Stephen was in the North Dublin workhouse in 1899 and 1911. A widower from 34 Upper Tyrone street. Note this address was also in tree # 18 families. There must be a link. Mar Mary Ann Conlon 1872
      • Bridgit Hade b 1873

        • Richard b Hayde 1919
        • Philomenia Hayde b 1921 d 1995 London. M Robert McNamara
        • Thomas Hayde b 1821 d 1968. M Catherine Nugent

Christopher and Matthew do not feature in parish records outside Dublin so it is hard to determine where these families came from.

Tree # 16 – From Donard, Dunlavin Co Wicklow

There are several families that settled in Dublin in early 1800 that I know came from Co Wicklow. I have treated these as part of tree # 16.

A Henry Hede/Heade and Hannah or Judith had the following children in Dunlavin parish (for which records started in 1815):

  • Henry Haid b 1815
  • Anne Hede b 1816
  • William Heade b 1817
  • Michael Heade b 1821

Henry born 1815.

Henry is not a name used very frequently.  I have assumed that any references to Henry are linked to this parish.

A Henry Haid was in the 1851 Dublin census as well as the William O’Brien records of 1848 as Haide. He was probably baptised as an adult in Rathmines in 1852.  In 1848 he was in a Dublin jail aged 33 and this entry states his birth place as Dunlavin, Co Wicklow. This is the reference I have used to treat Henry as a son of Henry and Judith as it is not in the parish records (which start in 1815).

I have found no record of a marriage or descendants.

William Hayde, a smith, b 1817 and Catherine Vins.

William Hayde from Donard and Catherine Vins married in 1838 in the Dunlavin parish (Co Wicklow). They were in Donnybrook, Dublin in 1849 Griffiths record. In 1856 a Michael Heade and William Heade were in Donnybrook and were mentioned in the Freeman’s Journal.  I suspect they were brothers rather than Michael being his son b 1846 as the article referred to offering hospitality to the working people of the town during a Fair Week. I think this is the Michael b circa 1830 mar Margaret Maher – as below.

Their children were:

  • Henry Hayed b 1842. He was a smith as was his father. Mar Mary Anne Price 1869, Haddington Road, Dublin
    • Catherine Ester Heade b 1870. Became a nun. D Chicago 1939
    • Patrick Robert Heade/Hayde b 1872. Mar Bridget Coonan 1911
      • Margaret b 1912 m 1939
      • Mary Bridget b 1912. M Alexander Bolster
      • Robert E b 1915 d 1988. M Anne Mary Cahill
      • Joseph b 1917 d 1918
    • Robert Joseph Hayde b 1874. A Blacksmith. M Elizabeth Garland
    • Mary Teresa Heade b 1880. Became a nun. D St Louis 1954
    • William Heade b 1880. A blacksmith. D Durham 1952. Mar Frances Ahern 1904
      • Kathleen b 1915 d 2002
      • Elizabeth b 1905 d 1992
      • Irene b 1910 Southampton d 2004 Durham
    • Henry Heade b 1882. Mar Bridget Maguire, St Pauls, Dublin, 1918
      • Frances MR b 1919
      • Michael J b 1920. M Margaret Cleary
      • Theresa C b 1923
      • Henry Matthew b 1924
    • Elizabeth Heade b 1884. Became a nun. D 1977 Liverpool
    • Michael Heade b 1886. Mar Julia Leahy, St Pauls, Dublin 1917
      • Marie b 1918 d 1988
      • Anthony b 1920 d 2011. M Mary Ryan
      • Rosaleen P b 1921 d 1995
      • Brendan J b 1924 d 2011. M Sheila Markham
      • Julie Anne b 1928 d 2002
      • Veronica b 1931
    • Thomas Patrick Heade b 1889. Served with Royal Engineers and Military Police
  • William Hade b 1846
  • Thomas Hade/Heade b 1848. A coachman. D 1900 of bronchitis.  Mar Bridget Cahill 1885

Surnames were a mixture of Haide, Heade, Hade and Hayde in the St Paul’s parish records and Heade and Hayde in the civil records. Descendants are in Dublin and have adopted the Heade surname.

Michael Hade b 1821 and Margaret Maher

Michael was a tailor from Roundtown, South Dublin. As mentioned above under William, a Michael and William Heade from Donnybrook were mentioned in an article in the Freeman’s Journal in 1856.  I suspect they were brothers.  The fact that both their first born children were named Henry reinforces this assumption.

Their children were:

  • Henry Hade b 1854 Haddington Road parish, Donnybrook d 1866
  • William Hade b 1856
  • Patrick Hade b 1859. Mar Sarah McDonald 1874, Donnybrook, South Dublin
    • Michael Heade b 1874 d 1876
    • Henry Hade b 1876
    • William Hayde b 1877. Enlisted in militia 1904. Mar Sarah Lee
      • Patrick W b 1911 d 1945 (WW2). M Jessie Donaldson
    • Michael Heade b 1874. Michael joined the militia 1899 then RFA. Mar Mary Ann Brady in 1913.
      • Elizabeth b 1914
      • Mary J b 1917
      • Ellen M b 1920
      • Sarah b 1921 d 1922
      • Michael b 1926
      • Anne b 1928 d 2007. M Michael Nutley
    • Patrick Heade b 1880 d 1939. Joined militia 1904. Mar Margaret McCormick 1907
      • Sarah b 1910
    • Elizabeth Haide b 1883
    • Thomas Hayde b 1885
    • James Joseph Hayde b 1886
    • Sarah Hayde b 1888

James Hade b circa 1816 and Bridget Flanagan.

This family must be connected as they have a Matthew in their children.  I have assumed that James is another child of Henry and Hannah but this is pure conjecture.

They were in Roundtown, Rathfarnham 1849

  • John Heade b circa 1830. Mar Bridget
    • Michael Joseph Hade b 1856
  • Sarah Heade b circa 1835. Mar 1860
  • Anne Heade b 1840. Mar 1863
  • Thomas Heade b 1843. Mar Johanna Kearney or Kenny in St Mary’s Dublin, in 1882
    • Elizabeth Mary Haide b 1865
    • Bridget Heade b 1870
    • Sarah J Heade b 1872
    • Emily Heade b 1875
    • William Heade b 1876

Tree # 16 – From Ballymore Eustace

Patrick Hade b circa 1824 and Ester Riley from Ballymore Eustace

Patrick and Ester Riley baptised James and Mary in the Ballymore Eustace parish in 1847 and 1852.  They also baptised Mary again in St Paul’s in 1852. This was probably to establish themselves in this parish. They had also baptised Thomas and Patrick (twins) in St Andrew’s parish in 1859.

They lived in Haddington Road in the 1860s and 70s. There is no record of their marriage so parents are unknown.  I have treated them as part of Tree # 16 only to give them a home in a family tree.

  • James Hade b 1847, Ballymore Eustace

    • William T Heade b 1886 d Pennsylvania 1887
    • Samuel Edward Heade b 1891 d Pennsylvania 1948

Descendants of Owen and Helen are in Pennsylvania as Heade.

Owen is not a name used very often in the family.  There are few other references to this name in Dublin or Co Kildare or Wicklow. There is a Eugene (Owen) who had children in Ballymore Eustace in the 1780s however the connection is unclear.

The tree groups some of these people together but in reality the precise connections prior to the 1800s are a bit of a guess.  The tree is at https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/tree/51972226/family

Rathmines Family

Thomas Heade married Anne McCreate/McCreade/McCreat in Rathmines parish in 1860.  His parents were Denis and Anne Hayden. They lived in Greenmount, Harolds Cross, a village in Dublin just south of the canal and the south circular. A Patrick Hayde witnessed the baptism of their first child Patrick Joseph in 1861. He must have been a brother of Denis but I have no subsequent trace of him.

Some researchers have treated Denis as the son of Thomas and Margaret Daley.  I am not convinced of this as they had children in the 1820s in St Catherines parish.  None of whom were a Denis, however there was a Patrick in 1833.

Denis is not a name that is used widely in the family.  It is almost exclusively only used in families from the Dunlavin, Co Wicklow area.  These catholic parish records only started in 1815 and are of very poor quality in places.

In this parish, there is a Denis Heade baptised in 1821.  He was the son of James and Rose from Donard. There was also Mary in 1823, Richard in 1824, James in 1828 and William in 1822. Could this be the Denis who married Anne Hayden and he was baptised as an older child?

There was also a Denis and Anne Heade who baptised a Mary Heade in 1827 in Dunlavin parish.  Could Mary be an older child?

A Denis Heade was in the 1834 tithe records for a 1 acre plot in Donard Bog, Dunlavin.  He was not there in the 1850s nor was there any record in the valuation records of the 1840s and 1850s. It is quite likely that this Denis moved to Dublin and is the person noted below.

Denis b abt 1811 and Anne Hayden

Ann was in Manchester 1871 with son Edward and his wife Elizabeth. A Denis Head was mentioned in the Freeman’s Journal in 1831 in an article about the Mechanics and Trader’s Society. This could be the same person as a mechanic seemed to be a family occupation.

    • Edward Hade b abt 1836, bricklayer d Burnley 1907. M Elizabeth Quinn Dublin in 1862 then Anne Finnegan Manchester 1872. Edwards parish baptism (as Hade) records his parents as Denis and Anne Hayden. He was in Manchester 1871 as Heade and 1891 as Hade.

Rathfarnham and Willbrook Family

Rathfarnham is a parish in the south of Dublin city as shown on the map below:

There are several families that are recorded in the records for this parish that seem to come from Kildare/Wicklow.  I have not been able to link these families to any specific tree. These families are explained below:

Patrick Hade b 1825 a shoemaker, and Ellena from Wicklow

Pat was in the 1901 census as a widower, b Wicklow aged 68 (b 1833).  When he died as a Hayde in 1909 aged 84 (b 1825) he left his estate to a non family member. Patrick was in prison in 1854 aged 17 (b 1837) for dealing in coal. He was b Donard. He was again in prison in 1877 aged 40 (b 1837) for being drunk and these records showed he was born Merginstown, Wicklow. Merginstown is by Mullycagh Lower/Crehelp/Donard in Dunlavin parish.

The civil records for the marriage of Patrick and Elizabeth Conway in 1869 stated that his father Patrick Heade was a shoemaker. The parish records of the marriage added that Patrick’s parents, Patrick and Ellena were from Langstown. (this could be Longstone, a village just south of Ballymore Eustace).

Their children were:

    • Patrick Hade b abt 1845 labourer. M Elizabeth Conway in 1869 in Willbrook
      • Patrick Hade b 1870 and Jane Knowles (3 children by 1911) – Whitechurch 1911 census.

As outlined in the Kildare/Wicklow posts page, a Denis Hayde, who was born in Roundwood County Wicklow in 1866, came to Liverpool with sisters Mary, Rosanna and Julie in the 1880s. His older brother Patrick emigrated to America in 1884 and settled in Queens, New York.

Denis met and married Mary Heim (born in Germany) in 1915 while Mary, Rosanna and Julie went to America in the 1890s.

Denis is the son of Thomas and Mary Cahill.  Thomas was a shoemaker.  He was a son of Patrick and Mary Keogh from Crehelp who lived in the Dunlavin area of Kildare/Wicklow.

Denis and Mary had 4 sons. One had 9 children and emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand, while the other 3 had 25 children between them. Most of these children, and their descendants, are still in the Liverpool area, although some have moved south or emigrated to America.

This Tree is genetically linked to Trees # 1, 9, 10 and 15. This proves a link to Tipperary. Somehow the family migrated north from Tipperary to Wicklow/Kildare.

Families in Australia come from 3 trees.

The majority of those using the Hayde name are descendants of Tree # 1 who settled initially in New Zealand and then in more recent years some have migrated to Australia.

The second tree relates to a family that adopted the Hade surname and are linked to Tree # 16 and are descended from Matthew (b 1818) who was sent to Australia for being a pick pocket in Dublin.

This tree is https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/tree/51972226/family

The third tree links to a family that emigrated from Germany and uses the Hayde name.  This is Tree # 13. This is covered further at the German posts page.

In addition to the family descended from the Hayde family described in the New Zealand, India and England families (Tree # 1), there is another Hayde family in Auckland.

This family is descended from a James Hayde born in Dublin around 1800.

James was a wool dyer.  He and (probably) his brother Patrick Hayde (a spinner) both lived in the Tenters/Newmarket area of Dublin in the 1820s.

They both had children who all lived in and around Dublin City, just south of the river.  Some were painters in the 1850s, some were newsvendors and several joined the army.

Some descendants still live in Dublin while some have moved to London and one emigrated to Auckland in the 1950s.  A copy of this tree is at https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/tree/52117927/family

A member of this tree has done a DNA test and the results are very similar to those for descendants of the trees that originated in Tipperary.  Thus the James and Patrick who were in Dublin in 1820s have Tipperary roots, but the connection is unknown.
